
About the Artist
M.S. Shivarudraiah is an award winning Indian Artist who draws on over 50 years of professional experience as an Artist and Educator. He obtained a degree in Fine Arts from Mysore University in 1968. He has since been an Art Educator, first at D.Banumaiah’s Pre University, Mysore and then from 1976 to 2007 at Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1, Vasco, Goa.
He has conducted numerous demonstrations and workshops in Goa and interstate and has been a member of jury for art competitions. Shiva’s artistic achievements include numerous awards both in state and national exhibitions including the ‘Kala Bhushan’ and ‘Kalashri’ Award. He received the ‘Millennium 2000’ Incentive Award by Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Ministry of Human Resource Development, for meritorious services to promote art and culture.
Shiva specialises in portraiture, figurative and wildlife paintings, but is by no means limited to these subjects. He displays similar aptitude in other subjects – abstraction, culture, landscape and architecture. His portraits capture the inner emotions and character. He has a fascination for faces and the human forms, often using compassion to highlight the human ethos. He works from live sittings or from photographic references. He has also devoted his career capturing the beauty and drama of the nature in his paintings and has spent many years observing and photographing and painting nature and wildlife.
In his work, his goal is to remain truthful in his response to a subject. He has an eternal fascination with light, its source and colour, and the way in which it falls on various subjects. Shiva draws different qualities from each medium and captures the essence of his subject with boldness and sensitivity. His preferred mediums are oil, watercolour and ink, but he also has extensive experience of working with pastels, charcoal, acrylics and mixed media. He has great passion for watercolours- it is the fluidity and spontaneity that attracts, and allow him great freedom to capture spontaneous moments.
As an Art Educationalist, he has made unique contribution in promoting art and has offered children new perspectives, aimed at developing ‘confident’ and be ‘involved learners’. His students have exhibited and won awards in local, national and international competitions and have achieved professional excellence.
Shiva has hidden talents in photography and theatre. He possesses skills in developing and printing black & white photographs, and over the years, he has been involved in numerous theatrical dramas. Since been retired from Kendriya Vidyalaya No 1. Vasco, Goa, he has been involved in promoting Child Art and sharing his passion for painting through mentorship and various competitions. He is also involved in painting portraits and figurative commissions and participates in various art exhibitions. Shiva’s art works are held in public and private collections in India, Singapore, Australia, United Kingdom and United States.
